VANCOUVER — The City of Vancouver has announced the B.C. Supreme Court has dismissed a legal challenge that called into question the city and Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation’s authority to proceed with the planned renewal of the Vancouver Aquatic Centre (VAC).
The court’s decision allows the city and board to proceed with next steps in renewing the facility which has neared the end of its functional lifespan, states a release.
The challenge was brought by the Protecting our Vancouver Aquatic Centre Society.
Following the VAC’s closure earlier this summer, crews began site preparation for demolition of the existing structure. Demolition is now anticipated to begin in early October.
Once complete, the new centre will include:
- A 25-metre lap pool for swimming and competitive events
- A dedicated diving tank with multiple board heights
- A leisure pool and wellness amenities, including a hot pool and sauna
- An expanded fitness room with more equipment
- A multi-purpose room for community programs and events
- Accessible washrooms and change rooms
The project is fully funded within a $175 million budget.
