New Millwright training centre coming to Port Hope

PORT HOPE, ONT. — The Ontario government has announced it is investing $9.8 million in a new training centre in Port Hope.

Supported through the , the new facility will help train 2,550 apprentices, journeypersons and new entrants over the next five years, explains a release.

Led by UBC Millwright Local 2309, the new 44,986-square-foot training centre will provide classroom and hands-on training in millwright skills such as welding, rigging, alignment and industrial maintenance, along with certifications in areas like working at heights, confined spaces and equipment operation.

Participants will train on industry-standard equipment and technologies, including turbines, conveyor systems, welding equipment and robotic technologies, the release adds.

In 2025 there were 43,300 millwrights employed in the province and the average wage was $40.47 per hour.

To date, Ontario has committed $139.6 million through the SDF Capital Stream to expand and modernize training facilities across the province.
