Metro Vancouver and its union go to mediation just as members take strike action

VANCOUVER — Metro Vancouver says the union representing its outside workers has agreed to mediation.

It came just as members started full-scale strike action to pressure the employers back to the bargaining table.

The regional district says in a statement that the union has agreed to mediation with the Labour Relations Board.

Metro Vancouver says in a statement that mediation is a practical step to help both parties make meaningful progress in reaching an agreement.

After conducting weeks of rotating job action, members of the Greater Vancouver Regional District Employees’ Union walked off the job on Monday with the exception of those designated as essential-service staff.

The union represents more than 700 workers covering operations in water and wastewater treatment, air quality tracking, natural resources, parks, infrastructure and ecological reserves across Metro Vancouver.
