Alexia MacLeod to break ground as OGCA’s first female chair
SOMERVILLE CONSTRUCTION, CONSULTING AND PROJECT MANAGEMENT – This September, Alexia MacLeod will be named chair of the Ontario General Contractors Association, the first female ever to assume the role. MacLeod is president and co-owner of Somerville Construction, Consulting and Project Management.

Alexia MacLeod will breakÌýthe glass ceiling this September when she is named chair of the Ontario General Contractors Association (OGCA), the first female ever toÌýassume the role.Ìý

Her response to this feat is genuine andÌýmatter of fact:Ìý“This isn’t going to be one and done,â€ she told the Daily Commercial News.Ìý

“I love this industryÌýand I want other young girls, middle-aged women,Ìýto come in and say,Ìý‘Yes,Ìýthis is my career path,Ìýand this is what I’m meant to do for the rest of my life.’â€Ìý

MacLeod isÌýa co-owner and president of Somerville Construction, ConsultingÌýandÌýProject Management. She beganÌýworking at the firm in 2004 as an administrative assistantÌýand came to the company with eight years ofÌýmanagement experience which she gained working for The Sports Medicine Specialists and team physicians for the Toronto MapleÌýLeafs.ÌýÌý

AtÌýSomervilleÌýher primary role is managing the company’s financial operations and she also co-ordinates business development. After a successful bid and project award, she serves as controller and financial administrator.Ìý

MacLeodÌýhas been a member of the OGCA board forÌýmore thanÌý10 years and saysÌýshe has seen the industry evolve, butÌýthere’sÌýstill work to be doneÌýto bring more women into the industry, intoÌýbigger corporate roles and ontoÌýmoreÌýboards.Ìý

“I am hoping by being in this position and hopefully having more presence and a bigger voice in the organization that we can reach more people, more women in particular,â€ she says.ÌýÌý

“For me, it’s not even about bringingÌýwomen to the table.ÌýWe’reÌýhere.ÌýWe have been doing this. I think nowÌýit’sÌýmore about education.ÌýHowÌýdo we educate men in their position to help grow within their companies?Ìý

“ForÌýwomen,Ìýin particular,ÌýweÌýneed to have different negotiating tools.ÌýWe’reÌýalready coming in with a different package.â€Ìý

OGCA president Giovanni Cautillo saysÌýMacLeodÌýis a natural fit for board chairÌýand her impactÌýwill be felt in many ways.Ìý

“She was very much a pioneer in making sure that women had a place at the table and now women are running the table,â€Ìýhe describes.Ìý“Sitting on the board of all men, she stands out.ÌýWhen she does speak her mind, the place goes quiet.ÌýShe’sÌýseen as someone who providesÌýtimelyÌýinput and provides it in a very refreshing way.ÌýAlexia isÌýgoing to makeÌýa hugeÌýdifference; she hasÌýchanged the way the board configuration is being looked at.Ìý

“This is just the beginning of a new chapter for the OGCA.â€Ìý

MacLeod succeeds Greg Brokenshire, president of Alberici Constructors Canadian division.Ìý

“Greg has been a wonderful chair,â€ MacLeod adds. “I hold him in such high regard, and I am so happy to be his successor.â€Ìý

Since itsÌýinceptionÌýin 2023, the event has beenÌý“more of a crescendo than an evolution,â€ MacLeod states. “The industry was just so excited from the get-go.ÌýIt is an environment that both men and women can come to.â€Ìý

This year’s event features speakers Leslie Dibling, director of organizational development at AMC Services, andÌýAgnes Watkinson, founder of AMC Services.ÌýÌý

With 19 years of experience in the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» industry, Dibling brings operational insight into leading people and performance in complex, high-stakes environments, the OGCA notes. Her focus includes designing and implementing programs that build workforce capabilities and align with key business objectives.Ìý

Cautillo echoes her comments,ÌýstatingÌýthe eventÌýon the wholeÌýis meant to change the landscape of Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³».Ìý

“The gala is our focal point for women in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»,â€ÌýheÌýstates,Ìý“butÌýitÌýrequires all people in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» to understand the necessity to move in that direction.

“I am putting out an APB, for women in the industry that want to make a difference.ÌýYou’reÌýalready making a difference in your own companies, by joining the OGCA you are making a difference for the industryÌýon theÌýwhole.

“There’s a seat at every table for them.
